About Sustainable Farming!

Sustainable Farming - Free Range, Heritage Breed Chickens

We  hatch our own eggs and generally house 30 to 40 "free range", Heritage  Breed, Dual Purpose chickens at a time. Each fall we'll rotate out 10 to  15 for family and friends. We have a water collection system connected  to our chicken house which filters the first rain out to dump and then  collects rain each time thereafter. The rain water runs into collection  barrels and is distributed via pipes to water the chickens via water  cups shown in the pictures. No waste! We collect farm fresh eggs daily  that are second to none. All natural, Sustainable Farming done right.

Free Ranging Self Sustaining Heritage Breed Turkeys

We  hatch our own Turkey eggs and raise Free Range Heritage Breed Turkeys  each year. We start them off indoors for the first 6 weeks of their  lives. During their 6th or seventh week the babies are moved to a safe,  reinforced aviary built from a child's recycled steel framed swing.   This is an easy project and a safe home for our wonderful turkeys.

      Organic Mushroom Farming

We create 5x8 mushroom beds to grow beautiful and tasty Wine Cap mushrooms. Red Garden Giant or Stropharia Rugosoannulta. We also harvest dogwood trees from our property then drill and plug the logs with Gourmet Shiitake, or Blue Dolphin Oyster Mushroom spawn. We stack them and water them like you would your garden. Then, at the right time of year, we get to enjoy the fruits of our labor. Fresh home grown Gourmet mushrooms for the table. A beautiful example of sustainable farming done right!

Low Tunnel Gardening, Traditional Gardening and Rain Gardens

With low tunnels, we are able to plant late February/early March and harvest in June when everyone else is starting to plant.  Then we have our traditional garden that is planted in early June and harvested in September. We recycle our cattle supplement bags that are made of paper because they not only hold water well but also provides great environments for worms which create super nitrogen for the soil which then makes the plants larger and more vigorous. Another part of our Sustainable farming.

          Non GMO Heirloom Seed Collection

We grow our own produce using heirloom seeds. Once we grow and harvest the foods we use for our family, we harvest a save a percentage of the seeds produced by our heirloom seeds to be used in the next growing season.  Sustainable farming done right!
